Taxpayers are paying for controversial Queensland MP Billy Gordon to rent an office on Thursday Island despite it being unstaffed since he was elected in January.

Clerk of the Queensland Parliament Neil Laurie told ABC radio that the lease on the second office in the Cook electorate would also be renewed after Mr Gordon promised to open it on a regular basis.

Mr Gordon is entitled to two offices due to the size of his electorate.
