Survey finds Queenslanders more likely to save wallet from fire before pets

Sorry Fido, but Queenslanders think you're not as valuable as their wallets.

A new survey by insurer RACQ found that if Sunshine State residents had a house fire they would be more likely to save their handbags, purses and wallets than a pet.

The survey showed that 71.7 percent of people would rescue their purse while only 55.9 percent would grab the dog, cat or goldfish bowl.

Electronics also ranked high compared with more sentimental items, with respondents saving their smartphones or tablets (48.6 percent) ahead of photographs (45.7 percent), certificates (12.9 percent), university degrees (8.1 percent) or letters (3.3 percent).

The findings were based on an analysis of insurance claims made throughout last year and an internet survey of 1019 Queenslanders conducted last month.

It found that one in five people would go for their jewellery, 15 percent would take glasses while nearly 8 percent would endeavour to save items from their wardrobe.

Computers would be spared by the flames by nearly 40 percent of people while roughly a quarter would carry their back-up drives from the flames.
