Solar council puts heat on coalition

The Australian Solar Council is turning up the heat on the Turnbull government by calling for voters to number coalition parties last on July 2.

The peak body for the solar industry says it is breaking from tradition in its 54-year history by advocating votes in a specific direction.

The solar council says it has taken the stance due to three years of "relentless attacks" by the Turnbull and Abbott governments on solar and renewable energy.

It says the coalition's opposition to renewable energy constitutes an existential threat to the solar industry.

A formal announcement will be made in Brisbane at the Bonner Vote Solar Forum on Tuesday night which will feature shadow environment minister Mark Butler, Greens Senator Larissa Waters and fellow Queensland Senator Glenn Lazarus.
