Residents took to social media to confirm what they had felt was truly a quake and to share their reactions.

Maroochydore man Andrew Whitehead tweeted that it was "weird".

"So I spend all that time in LA and my first earthquake is here, in Australia, in Maroochydore," he said.

Other Twitter users played down the experience.

"Anyone else feel that or was it a big truck nearby that I couldn't hear?" Paul Barnett wrote.

Gold Coast resident Kate Davis said she had thought it was a "big gust of wind" at first.

Others were more excited, including Twitter user Elsa.

"Just experienced my first earthquake! Windows shook a good few minutes," she wrote.
