Smuggled goods found at Qld prison

Queensland prison officers have discovered a significant cache of contraband at a low-security prison near the NSW border.

A package containing a phone, distilled alcohol, tobacco, prescription medication and drugs was found during a perimeter search of the Palen Creek Correctional Centre on Tuesday.

"This is a significant find, but is extremely disappointing that prisoners who have progressed to the low-security environment would seek to procure this contraband," Corrective Services Acting Commissioner Kerrith McDermott said.

Searches were triggered when a prisoner was seen to move towards the facility's boundary.

"Prisoners and visitors smuggling or dealing in contraband in correctional centres is a serious issue," Acting Commissioner McDermott said.

"If people attempt to introduce contraband into a correctional centre, there are consequences."

Smuggling or attempting to smuggle prohibited items into a corrective services facility is an offence with a penalty of up to two years imprisonment.
