'Sly groggers' in Qld found with huge haul

A couple are accused of trying to smuggle hundreds of litres of alcohol into a far north Queensland Aboriginal community.

Police allegedly found 49 casks of wine, 132 cans of beer and four bottles of bourbon in a ute bound for Pormpuraaw on Thursday afternoon.

The 35-year-old man and 39-year-old woman were both charged with attempting to bring liquor into a restricted area and are due to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on January 4.
