Slavery cases and the push to stop it

MODERN-DAY SLAVERY IN AUSTRALIA:

* 4300 people estimated to be living as modern-day slaves in Australia

* Domestic and migrant workers most affected, with those in seafood, agricultural processing and sex industries most at risk

* Senate committee currently examining need for a Modern Slavery Act

* Campaigner and mining magnate Andrew Forrest says Australia also needs independent anti-slavery commissioner

* Forrest's Walk Free Foundation compiles the Global Slavery Index, which estimates 45.8 million people are currently enslaved worldwide

SLAVERY CASES IN 2017:

* July: Brisbane man and woman charged with human trafficking, domestic servitude after allegedly enslaving a Fijian woman for eight years.

* June: Two men face court accused of slavery, possessing child pornography after Melbourne house raid. One allegedly helped the victim enter Australia before exploiting them.

* May: West African girl, 17, escapes Sydney unit, tells police she was held as a sex slave for weeks.

* April: Magistrate says a woman allegedly kept as a slave for eight years by a Melbourne couple can testify via video to limit her trauma. Couple is accused of scalding her with hot water during her ordeal.

* February: Two Taiwanese nationals admit enslaving people to run call centre scam from Brisbane house. One victim escaped and led police to a group of exploited Taiwanese workers who'd had their passports taken.
