More severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep through southeast Queensland on Tuesday afternoon, a day after hail battered west of Brisbane.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a gusty thunderstorm for Brisbane and an 80 per cent chance of rain, but has not issued a weather warning.

"There will be severe storms ... early afternoon we're expecting them to build up on the ranges," a BOM spokesman said.

The storms are expected to affect an area stretching from the Darling Downs to Brisbane and Noosa.

On Monday night parts of Toowoomba were hit by hail and wind gusts up to 80km/h.
