Semi-nude man, rain has Qld town smiling

A cheeky photo of a bloke in his jocks leading two horses through a drought-ravaged outback Queensland town has locals grinning.

But while many have found humour in the man's appearance, it's the floodwaters beyond the man's backside that's really made folks in Winton happy.

"We haven't had rain like this for about 10 years," publican and tour guide Michael Crapp told AAP after 120mm of rain was recorded in the township on Wednesday and Thursday.

"That's pretty spectacular rain for us. No doubt there's a lot of happy farmers."

Mr Crapp laughed when asked about the photo doing the rounds on social media which shows local man Geoff Cox leading the horses to safety through floodwaters while wearing nothing but his underwear.

"He looks after the showgrounds down there and would've been guiding the horses to higher ground," he said.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michael Paech said between Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon about 120mm of rain had fallen over Winton - well above the monthly average of 54mm.

"That makes (Wednesday) the wettest March day since 1994," he said.

Heavy widespread rain was also recorded across much of the state's west and north-west, including 104mm at Glenormiston, near Boulia.

A late wet season finally arrived in Townsville where 158mm of rain was recorded on Wednesday.

More thunderstorms and rain are expected to fall over western parts of the state this week.
