Scam warning after Qld pensioner loses 43k

Elderly Queenslanders have been warned to be wary of scammers posing as tax office representatives after a pensioner was defrauded of $43,400.

Police say the scammers tell residents over the phone that they owe money to the Australian Taxation Office and warn a warrant will be issued for their arrest if they don't pay up.

A 75-year-old woman from Alexandra Hills, in Brisbane's bayside, recently fell victim to the scam, giving $43,400 to an aggressive scammer over 11 days despite being initially told she owed the ATO $9674.
