Sargent sighters set to give evidence

Two men who separately reported meeting a man matching the description of missing soldier Sean Sargent soon after his disappearance in March 1999 are scheduled to give evidence at a Queensland inquest.

The Coroners Court is set to hear from Sean Mann, who reported drinking at a Brisbane bar with a gay army official named Sean in the weeks following Mr Sargent's disappearance, and Kevin Jones, then a Byron Shire Council ranger, who told police he'd seen a man matching Mr Sargent's description illegally camping in the NSW town.

In the weeks after Mr Sargent's disappearance, Mr Mann told authorities he had met a man in a popular Brisbane gay bar who went by the name of Sean and said he had been having issues with the army.

The court has previously heard evidence from witnesses who testified Mr Sargent had been living a double life, a theory that has been disputed by members of his family.

On Friday, the court is also due to hear from Mr Jones, a former ranger with military experience who told police he had found a man illegally camping behind a Byron Bay caravan park soon after Mr Sargent vanished.

Upon reading about his disappearance, Mr Jones reported to police that the man had matched a missing person's description of Mr Sargent.

The man had left by the time he returned to the campsite with police.
