Soldier vanished after fight, inquest told

The host of a house party where missing soldier Sean Sargent was last seen before vanishing in 1999 has described how he became embroiled in a fight with an army reservist before disappearing.

Over the past four days Mr Sargent's relatives, military personnel and police investigators have given evidence to the Coroners Court in Brisbane about efforts to find him since he disappeared on March 19, 1999.

His father, sister and ex-girlfriend have all said they believe he's dead.

Mr Sargent, then 24, vanished after attending a party with friends at a share house in the Brisbane suburb of St Lucia.

Kate Gubanyi, then a journalism student who had been living in the house, told the court on Thursday she had been told Mr Sargent scuffled with her army reserve housemate at the party.

The fight was brief and broken up by other revellers, she said.

Her evidence comes after Coroner John Hutton on Wednesday indicated he would find Mr Sargent had died in unknown circumstances.

The inquest into his disappearance is examining both the response by civilian and military police, and what may have caused Mr Sargent's disappearance.

Two men who separately reported meeting a man matching the description of Mr Sargent are expected to give evidence on Friday.
