Gruesome footage of a possum being repeatedly run over before trying to escape with its guts coming out has been sent to the RSPCA.

The video was shown to the organisation by a Queensland woman who says she received it through social media app Snapchat.

It shows the brushtail possum struggling under the car wheel and a young man smiling and throwing his arms up in the air as the severed animal tries to scamper away.

RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty said they thought two or three people were involved in the incident but were yet to pinpoint where it happened.

He said the organisation would pursue animal cruelty charges if the culprits were found.

"We quite seriously need to be concerned about these people," he told AAP.

"Extreme animal cruelty like this ... just indicates a complete lack of empathy."

The maximum penalty for animal cruelty in Queensland is three years' jail or a $235,600 fine.

The woman who sent the video wanted to remain anonymous but told the RSPCA she thought she knew one of the people involved.

Mr Beatty says the organisation has received more promising leads since posting the video on its Facebook page and called on anyone with information to come forward.
