Rockhampton flood clean-up continues

Rockhampton is keeping up its clean-up effort after floodwaters swamped the central Queensland city last week.

The Fitzroy River has now fallen below the minor flood level, with flooding continuing to ease along its lower reaches between Yaamba and Rockhampton, forecasters said.

At 5.30am on Monday, the river was at 6.1m and falling at Rockhampton.

More than 200 homes had water over the floorboards as a result of the flooding - the worst to hit the area since 2011 - and about 3000 residences and businesses were cut off.

A bulk waste collection service will begin from Wednesday for properties damaged by the flooding, and roads have reopened, including the Capricorn Highway to Gracemere and the Bruce Highway.

The Rockhampton Airport's runway has also undergone an engineering assessment, with flights unlikely to resume before Thursday, and power has been restored to low-lying properties.

Meanwhile, a major review has been ordered into how Queensland emergency services responded to the ravages of tropical cyclone Debbie, including the slow-onset flooding in Rockhampton.

Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan said on Sunday the state government wanted to make sure lessons had been learnt from Debbie, which struck Queensland almost a fortnight ago.
