Man rescued after falling 10 metres down Queensland mountainside

A daring rescue has played out in Queensland's Scenic Rim region to save an injured hiker who was stuck in freezing conditions on the side of a mountain.

More than five helicopters and a dozen paramedics were involved in the delicate operation today, which included a battle with mountainous terrain, dense bushland and challenging weather.

One of the crew descended through dense bushland and re-emerged moments later with the patient on board.

Andres Alduan, 44, was stuck for 24 hours.

The frightening ordeal began yesterday morning while on a hike with friends.

Alduan slipped, fell five metres and dislocated both of his shoulders.

By midday, paramedics arrived and reached him on the ground.

The Westpac rescue chopper was called in from the Sunshine Coast but it quickly turned back.

Usually equipped for surf lifesaving rescues, the crew didn't have the medical supplies needed.

At 3.30pm, a second chopper from Lismore flew up but left as it was running too low on fuel.

The helicopter returned at sunset for a second go but challenging weather made the rescue impossible.

"The visibility for any of the rescuers was very hazardous," Jason Dutton from Queensland Ambulance Service said.

The injured hiker spent the night on the mountain in freezing and uncomfortable conditions but his friends and paramedics remained by his side.

The rescue mission resumed at first light and the man was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
