Remove hostile crocs, but no cull: survey

Three in four Queenslanders want aggressive and dangerous crocodiles removed from urban areas but few support a widespread cull.

Half of those surveyed as part of the state's crocodile management review believe there has to be a balance between conservation and public safety when dealing with the reptile.

The results showed 72 per cent supported the removal of hostile crocs from urban areas.

However just 15 per cent supported their widespread removal, and nearly a third of those surveyed wanted fewer crocodiles removed.

Environment Minister Steven Miles said the survey results undermined the opposition's calls for a crocodile cull.

Dr Miles said the results indicated widespread support for crocodile management arrangements, with some local governments requesting minor variations to management zone boundaries.

Key stakeholders, including tourism operators, also expressed concern that crocodile removal created unrealistic expectations of safety in some parts of the community.
