Recovery for crashed US aircraft continues

Dive teams will continue in their attempts to recover the submerged wreckage of a US military aircraft that crashed off the central Queensland coast, believed to have killed three Marines.

Australia's HMAS Melville located the tilt-rotor MV-22 Osprey at Shoalwater Bay, near Rockhampton, on Monday night.

The Royal Australian Navy dive clearance team then worked with US forces to finalise its recovery plans.

A remote operating vehicle is being used to remove the aircraft from the ocean floor.

There were 26 crew on board when it reportedly smashed into the deck of transport ship USS Green Bay during a training exercise on Saturday afternoon.

Twenty-three were rescued, but the three Marines presumed dead have been identified as Ruben Velasco, Corporal Nathan Ordway and Lieutenant Benjamin Robert Cross.
