Heavy rainfall to help douse Qld fires

Rains forecast for Queensland at the end of the week could give firefighters a reprieve from an onslaught of bushfires.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting showers and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday, with some areas expecting more than 70mm.

Most of the activity will be restricted south of Bowen through the central highlands, Darling Downs and southeastern districts.

Rainfall of up to 30mm is expected in some areas on Friday and could increase on Saturday.

"Rainfall amounts will be highly variable, due to the nature of showers and thunderstorms but many people can expect between five and 10mm with isolated totals of 15-30mm in heavier showers and storms on Friday," forecaster Jess Gardner said.

On Saturday the rain will move slowly eastwards with showers and thunderstorms contracting to the southeast coast.

"Rainfall will be variable on Saturday with the southeast coast expecting 15-30mm, with isolated heavier falls of 40-70mm or more with storms."

Parched towns further inland can also expect falls of at least a few millimetres as far west far as Surat, in southwest Queensland.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan has said any relief will be welcome for the town of Laidley, 80 kilometres west of Brisbane, after fire tore through about 10,000 hectares of land.

One home was destroyed by the bushfires whipped up by dry winds, which came close to the boundaries of a number of other homes.

About 30 fires continued to burn across Queensland on Wednesday afternoon.

A number of infernos have broken out across the Queensland and NSW in the past month.
