Queenslanders support lockout laws research finds

The majority of Queenslanders want the government's lockout laws to be passed in parliament, a new poll has found.

The Galaxy Poll, conducted for the Courier Mail, found 57 percent of those surveyed supported the legislation, which will be debated in parliament next week.

The laws, if successful, will ban shots after midnight and impose a 2am last drinks call statewide, but allows venues in entertainment precincts to apply for a 3am last drinks call if they combine it with a 1am lockout.

About a third of respondents wanted the measures to be tested first, while 14 percent were against them being implemented at all, the newspaper reported, without specifying how many took part in the survey.

The poll is likely to strengthen the government's resolve to push on with the legislation, despite call from crossbench MPs to consider postponing debate to ensure the laws can be considered properly.

The opposition has indicated it will vote against the laws, arguing there isn't enough evidence to show they'll be effective in curbing alcohol-fuelled violence.

The government had already seized on an earlier Galaxy Poll, commissioned earlier this month by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, which found 74 per cent of the 350 respondents supported the changes.
