Young girl found hanging from swing set in Queensland

A young girl is fighting for her life after her mother found her hanging by her neck from a swing set in north Queensland.

The three-year-old was flown to Mackay Hospital after she was found not breating on the family's property at Koumala, south of Mackay, about 5.30pm yesterday.

"The child was believed to be playing on a swing set as her mother tended to animals on the property," an RACQ-CQ Rescue helicopter spokeswoman said.

"When the mother returned to check on the child, she found her daughter hanging with the swing rope around her neck and not breathing."

The mother performed CPR on the child and managed to return a pulse before paramedics arrived.

The girl was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital about 7pm before being transported later to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition.

A Townsville Hospital spokesman said she was in a critical, but stable condition.
