Senior Queensland police officer Paul Taylor to resume role as Assistant Commissioner today, after fatally running over man in Cairns

Senior north Queensland police officer Paul Taylor will resume his role as Assistant Commissioner for the Northern Region today, after an investigation into the death of a man he ran over in Cairns was finalised.

Longreach butcher and father Ryan Savage, 37, was fatally run over near the garage door of the Cairns police headquarters early on February 15.

Initial investigations suggested Asst Comm. Taylor had been pulling into work when his car hit Mr Savage.

Police launched an investigation into the death, and decided to temporarily relocate Asst Comm. Taylor to another role.

An independent review of the Ethical Standards Command investigation has since been conducted by Queensland Police Service (QPS) senior executive officers, and the investigative report is being considered by the Coroner.

Although the coronial process is ongoing, QPS has announced that Asst Comm. Taylor will today return to his normal role.

Commissioner Ian Stewart said police had spoken with the Coroner, the chair of the Crime and Corruption Commission and the man’s family before making the decision.

"The QPS will continue to cooperate with any future proceedings in relation to this tragic indecent," he said.

"Our thoughts and condolences remain with the man’s family and we will continue to provide support to them."
