Three people were taken to hospital after a near-drowning on the Gold Coast last night, prompting a warning from Queensland Ambulance about the dangers of night swimming.

9News understands five people were pulled from waters off the esplanade of Surfers Paradise last night.

This included two females, along with one man.

They said they arrived on scene shortly after 6pm to see a female, in her "late teens", being retrieved from the water.

A 42-year-old male and a 60-year old female were also rescued.

They were treated on scene before being transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Adam Flory, Senior Operations Supervisor of Gold Coast, said the travellers were stuck in a rip.

"They were holidaying on the Gold Coast and swimming on an unpatrolled section of the beach," Mr Flory said.

"It had been closed due to lifeguards being off-duty.

"They entered the water and then got themselves into trouble."

Mr Flory praised the quick-actions of bystanders and local surfers who helped rescue the group.

He urged all beach-goers to swim between the flags and avoid low-light conditions such at nigh-time.

"We can't see people in the water at the dark," he said.

"It makes hard for first responders to be able to locate those persons."
