A man has been spotted fishing on the edge of a riverbank seemingly oblivious to the monster crocodile basking on the shore in Far North Queensland.

Video shows the man fishing on the Russell River south of Cairns as the crocodile watches on just metres behind him.

The crocodile has since been identified as Clyde, who is well known to Babinda locals.

The man filming the fisherman called him "stupid" and said the crocodile was nearly twice the size of him.

Crocodile expert Tommy Hayes told Today the government's "croc wise" message didn't seem to be getting across to people.

"I know he isn't dead, which is a good thing," Hayes said.

He said Clyde trusted people, meaning he knew humans wouldn't hurt him.
