Qld treasurer flays Labor economic plan

Queensland Treasurer Tim Nicholls has called on Labor to explain how it intends to fund its election promises.

Mr Nicholls' comments came after Labor announced two new policies worth a combined $119 million, promising an increase in nurses and high school guidance officers across the state.

The opposition is yet to say how it will fund the policies, but it has ruled out leasing public assets like the government has pledged to do.

Mr Nicholls says that leaves the opposition with two realistic options to pay down the state's $80 billion debt: raise taxes or cut services.

When it comes to economic policy, the Labor Party does not have a plan, he told reporters on Friday.

However, Mr Nicholls was unable to guarantee the LNP would not also increase such costs if re-elected, including by ending the 12-month freeze on public transport fares.

The opposition has not said whether it plans to increase fees, taxes and charges.
