Well-known for his shots on the golf course, Jason Day now has his name linked with a drive of a different kind in his Queensland hometown.

The rural town of Beaudesert, roughly an hour south of Brisbane, where Day grew up, has named a street in his honour.

Aptly, it has been dubbed Jason Day Drive.

Mayor John Brent said the unanimous Scenic Rim Council decision was a fitting tribute to the world No.2-ranked player and the area's favourite son.

"Many locals, golf enthusiasts and non-golfers alike, have followed his career for many years from a six-year-old junior at the Beaudesert Golf Club," Cr Brent said.

"The story of how his late father encouraged his interest in the sport after salvaging an old club from the tip is the stuff of local legend."

In August Day, 28, became the fifth Australian to win the PGA Championship, and the first player to finish 20-under-par at a major.
