Qld top cop takes 'right steps' on review

Queensland's top cop is taking the right steps to review policies and procedures in the wake of three fatal police shootings in a week, the state's Mental Health Commissioner says.

Dr Lesley van Schoubroeck has held urgent talks with Police Commissioner Ian Stewart after expressing concerns about the shootings, the most recent of which occurred on the Gold Coast on Monday evening.

The use of firearms should be a last resort, she had said prior to attending the "productive" meeting.

"The Commissioner of police is taking the right steps to review policies and procedures," Dr van Schoubroeck said on Wednesday.

"We are moving quickly to look at issues around the intersection of people with a mental illness and the criminal justice system."

The Department of Health was also involved in the review process.

"No one is able to draw any conclusions on the current six cases in Queensland, because they will be investigated by the coroner," Dr van Schoubroeck warned.

"We now need time to allow these processes to happen, and ensure we arrive at conclusions that are supported by the facts."

It was possible that not all of the Queensland shooting cases involved a mental illness, she added.

"I emphasise, that the majority of people with a mental illness are not a danger to the community."
