Gold Coast enjoys hottest ever July day

The Gold Coast is having its hottest ever July day as warm northwesterly winds bring a burst of summer to southeast Queensland.

The mercury at the Gold Coast Seaway hit 26.9C around 2.15pm (AEST) on Friday, eclipsing the previous record of 26.8C set in 2007.

Another July heat record was also broken at Archerfield, in Brisbane's south, with the temperature reaching 28.5C, which was 0.2C warmer than the previous 1946 record.

Brisbane's official maximum was 27.6C - still 2.5 degrees below the July record - on a day that began with heavy fog that delayed flights into the airport.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Dean Narramore said a combination of conditions, including warm northwesterly winds, was pushing up temperatures around the southeast.

He said more heat records could tumble on Friday, with temperatures in a number of places nudging all-time July highs.

The warm weather in southeast Queensland will continue into Saturday, as other states across the eastern seaboard endure yet another cold snap.

But despite summer-like temperatures, winter is by no means over for southeast Queenslanders.

"It's a bit to early to call it yet," Mr Narramore told AAP.
