Qld terror suspect charged with extortion

A man being investigated for terrorism-related offences has been accused of extorting a Brisbane cafe owner out of $10,0000.

The 31-year-old Logan man allegedly demanded the money from an inner-Brisbane cafe owner, threatening to take his business away and assault him if he didn't comply.

Detectives from anti-bikie Taskforce Maxima arrested the man, who will appear in a Brisbane Magistrates Court later this month, to face the extortion charge.

Further checks revealed the man was also part of a counter-terrorism investigation involving state and federal police.

Detective Superintendent Michael Niland said the extortion charge showed all levels of law enforcement were working together to crack down on serious crime.

"The complainant came forward after seeing the success the QPS (Queensland Police Service) is having against those who prey on the vulnerable," Supt Niland said.

"It is this change which assists us in keeping the Queensland community safer."
