Qld stepdad's rape jail term under review

A Queensland man sentenced to four months in prison for raping his nine-year-old stepdaughter may have his sentence appealed following community outrage.

The 35-year-old from Hervey Bay, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted to digitally raping the girl during an overnight trip to Mount Tamborine four years ago.

A judge last week sentenced the man to four months jail and two years probation upon his release.

Child protection advocates and thousands of people on social media have expressed outrage over the sentence, describing it as grossly inadequate.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is now considering whether to appeal the sentence.

"The ODPP is reviewing the matter and considering the prospects for an appeal against the sentence," a spokesperson told AAP.

More than 33,000 people have shared a post about the sentence on the Fighters Against Child Abuse Australia Facebook page.

The post said child abuse survivors had been again "slapped in the face" by the legal system.

"You get more if you don't pay a parking fine!" the post said.

"Surely they are kidding me right ... right ... sorry sadly no they are not."

Leading child protection advocacy group Bravehearts is also outraged over the man's sentence.

The organisation has called on the attorney-general to appeal the sentence and send a clear message that "the sexual assault of children will not be tolerated".
