Sydney shivers through 2016's coldest morn

Sydneysiders snuggled under blankets and turned up their heaters on Sunday as the city experienced its coldest morning of 2016.

Even in Queensland the southern border town of Stanthorpe recorded sub zero temperatures overnight.

"SE quarter of Qld shivered this AM! #Stanthorpe was the coldest with -4.5C," the Bureau of Meteorology posted on their Twitter page.

In Sydney's CBD the mercury dropped to 5.6C on Sunday morning and as low as -1.2C at Richmond in Sydney's northwest.

Sub-zero temperatures were also recorded in Horsley Park, Badgerys Creek, Camden and Campbelltown.

The BoM said the chilly conditions were brought on by a cold front and high pressure system occurring simultaneously.

"On Friday a cold front went through and that brought a cool air mass to NSW and Sydney in particular," meteorologist Rob Taggart said.

"Then a high pressure system moved in quite quickly, bringing clear skies and light winds."

Mr Taggart said despite the freezing conditions, Sunday's minimum temperatures were well off a Sydney record.

He said this year's unprecedented heat, in which both summer and autumn Sydney heat records were broken, had left people a little unprepared for the day's chill.

"The minimums we got this morning are a long way from being records, by three to four degrees," Mr Taggart said.

"This is fairly cold June weather. Normally we see this weather a couple of days every winter."
