Qld should put jobs over climate: Canavan

Queensland's premier has hit out at federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan after the senator said Annastacia Palaszczuk should prioritise jobs today over the future environment.

"Instead of trying to save the planet in 2050 the QLD Labor should just concentrate on saving jobs today!" Senator Canavan tweeted.

It's in response to the Palaszczuk government's announcement on Tuesday of a zero net emissions target by 2050.

Ms Palaszczuk, in Cairns on Wednesday for a week-long tour of the region, hit back, claiming the Commonwealth has money they could use to help ensure jobs for regional Queenslanders.

"I simply say to Matt Canavan that they (the federal government) have $5 billion sitting dormant in an infrastructure fund, where that money could be put to good use creating jobs in the far north of our state," Ms Palaszczuk told reporters.

The state government has also been seeking federal funding for a Rockhampton flood levee to protect against future flood events in the central Queensland city, which they say would be exacerbated by climate change.
