Students have paid tribute outside a Gold Coast high school following the death of a Year 10 classmate.

Lucas Millott, 15, died after suffering a medical episode in class on Thursday morning at Ormeau Woods State High School.

It's understood Lucas fell into cardiac arrest during the incident and despite receiving CPR from bystanders he died shortly after being taken to hospital.

On Friday, students, parents and teachers stood in silence in front of a floral memorial outside the school's main gates before the start of the school day.

"Lucas was an enthusiastic, loving, friendly young man who will be greatly missed by the Ormeau Woods State High School community," acting principal Dan Finn said in a statement.

"Support will be provided to students and staff at the school where required, and guidance counsellors will provide additional support for as long as it is needed."
