Brampton Island to get seven-star resort

A seven-star resort has been approved for Queensland's Brampton Island, four years after the holiday destination shut its doors.

The island's existing resort is set to be transformed into a boutique eco-resort featuring luxurious villas, a health spa, yoga platform, cinema, library and a three-hole golf course.

The exclusive resort will cater for a maximum 30 guests.

It's a far cry from the old accommodation, which had enough room for 220 holidaymakers before closing in January 2011.

Developer Brampton Enterprises, a subsidiary of United Petroleum, says "intense research" was undertaken to determine the most viable tourist destination.

The company bought the resort, off Mackay, in early 2010 for $5.9 million.

It then announced a major refurbishment, which was initially expected to be completed by the end of 2011.

Years of speculation about Brampton Island's future came to a head on Tuesday when Mackay Regional Council approved the redevelopment plans.

However, other approvals are required before construction begins.
