Husband fears for asylum seeker's welfare

The husband of an Iranian asylum seeker who was removed from Brisbane is unsure how she will cope when he returns from her new high security facility in Darwin.

Mojgan Shamsalipoor, 21, was months away from graduating at Yeronga State High School when she was forcibly removed last month from the Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation Centre and taken to the Wickham Point Immigration Detention Centre.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has since said the government is right to take action against failed asylum claimants.

Dozens of supporters took to the streets of Brisbane City on Saturday calling for her release.

Ms Shamsalipoor's husband, Milad Jafari, visited her for two weeks but will return to Brisbane on Saturday night.

"Mojgan does not belong in the middle of a desert behind fences and under guard," he said in a letter read out at the rally.

"I feel like her soul is with me always and it will return to Brisbane with me, but her physical body is out in the middle of nowhere in north Australia."

Ms Shamsalipoor's case had left the school community outraged, teacher Jessica Walker said.

"Despite all of the horrible things that have happened to her, it would be easy for her to become hopeless and fall into despair, but she hasn't done that," she said.

"She feels positive because of this support."

There are about 1000 students in some form of detention around the country, the rally heard.

Yeronga year 12 student Eden Boyd, 17, made a fiery attack on the Abbott government's policies.

"Their decisions on the treatment of asylum seekers are making Australia a laughing stock on the international stage and I refuse to allow them to ruin our cherished ideals of mateship and acceptance," she said.

Ms Boyd feared she would no longer be proud of her country if its leaders continued to show disregard for asylum seekers.

"How dare the government create an Australia that is no longer respected?" she said.

"I do not want to inherit a racist and ignorant country."
