Labor talks govt as Qld count continues

Annastacia Palaszczuk is considering the make-up of her Labor ministry, even though the final results of Queensland's "knife-edge" election may not be known until the weekend.

The electoral commissioner will formally return the writ and present the final results to Governor Paul de Jersey on Friday afternoon at the earliest.

But that has not stopped Ms Palaszczuk saying Labor will likely claim victory by Wednesday.

The party expects to win 44 seats, and has secured the support of independent Peter Wellington.

"Labor will have the majority of seats and I am confident that I can form government in this state," Ms Palaszczuk said on Monday.

She plans to tell Mr de Jersey she intends to form government at the close of business on Wednesday, and is already considering the make-up of her ministry.

Liberal National Party leader Lawrence Springborg said Labor was using "megaphone diplomacy" to put pressure on the governor.

He said the LNP would continue as the caretaker government until Mr de Jersey made a decision on the election outcome.

The result in the seat of Ferny Grove, where a Palmer United Party candidate was disqualified, was due to be sent to the Court of Disputed Returns.

The court could order a by-election, and may take months to make a ruling.

Mr Springborg said every seat needed to be declared before the election outcome could be known.

But he denied he was putting pressure on the governor to wait until the court had ruled on Ferny Grove.

"I'm not speculating on what the governor may or may not do," Mr Springborg said.

"If the governor chooses to take their own advice and counsel and call upon people, then that is a matter for the governor."

The Electoral Commission of Queensland had not formally declared any seats by Monday evening.

A commission spokesman suggested some seats where candidates had already conceded were still far too close to call.

"It's at knife-edge. It might be late on Tuesday afternoon that we will get the final figures," he told AAP.

The returning officers in each electorate were due to declare the winners of most the Queensland's 89 seats about 6pm on Tuesday.

As counting continues, the only thing certain is that Campbell Newman remains caretaker premier until he formally resigns or is dismissed by the governor.
