Police have begun excavating a far north Queensland tow truck yard as they reopen the cold case of a missing mother.

Leeann Lapham vanished in April 2010, just one month after giving birth to her son.

Investigators at the time said they believed the 30-year-old had met with foul play and the subsequent investigation uncovered a drug ring that led to the arrest of 25 people.

They are now focusing their efforts on a tow truck yard near Innisfail after receiving new information about the case.

At the time, a 36-year-old man known to Ms Lapham had been assisting police with their inquiries.

State homicide investigators from Brisbane have flown to Innisfail to assist local detectives.
