Qld police launch electronic fine system

Queenslanders can now opt to get one of the worst type of letters they'll ever receive via email or text.

The dreaded traffic infringement notice can now be delivered to email inboxes and mobile phones following the launch of a Queensland Police app on Thursday.

It means officers equipped with the app will no longer have to write out traffic infringement notices or send them via post.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Dale Pointon said the app would streamline processes, improve efficiencies and deliver government savings.

Queensland is the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce the real-time issue of infringement notices.

Police have also launched a campaign warning the public to be wary of potential scams relating to the electronic issue of tickets.

"It is important to stress that this in an opt-in system," Acting Inspector Gavin Raison said.

"You will only receive a TIN (traffic infringment notice) by email or MMS if you have spoken to an officer and volunteered to receive it this way."

Queensland police have issued more than 100,000 traffic infringement notices via post since September last year.
