A century ago 5000 Australian soldiers perished in just two days while fighting for a French village and now they'll be remembered at Brisbane's Gallipoli Barracks.

The Army's 1st Division will dedicate a plaque to the fallen at the Battle of Pozieres in which the 1st, 2nd and 4th Australian Division's suffered heavy casualties in the fight which began on July 23, 1916 and lasted two weeks.

The plaque will be unveiled at a ceremony on Friday morning.
