Queensland wants to build a "super highway" for electric cars.

The state government has called for expressions of interest to build Australia's first electric car charging station in Townsville, and it wants to build a string of stations along the entire Bruce Highway.

"Our vision is for this to be the start of an 'electric super highway'," Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland, Coralee O'Rourke, said in a statement on Saturday.
