Qld parly to debate national park changes

Queensland's minority Labor government will try in parliament to reverse controversial changes to how the state's national parks are managed.

The former Newman government amended the state's Nature Conservation Act in 2013 to open national parks to commercial operations in an effort to boost tourism.

The current Palaszczuk government, then in opposition, opposed the changes, arguing they were incompatible with the parks' primary purpose of conserving nature.

Debate on the legislation to reverse the Newman government's changes is expected to conclude on Wednesday.

The government was reduced to 42 MPs in the state's 89-seat parliament following Cairns MP Rob Pyne's resignation last week.

It means the government will need either three crossbenchers to support the legislation or have the backing of two to allow Independent Speaker Peter Wellington's deciding vote to get it over the line.
