Qld offers cyclone assistance to Vanuatu

Queensland is ready to deploy energy workers to help restore power in cyclone-stricken Vanuatu, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says.

The formal offer comes after the South Pacific island nation was battered by category five storm Cyclone Pam.

Ergon is preparing to send specialist crews and generator equipment to the devastated island to help with the recovery effort.

"My heart goes out to the people of Vanuatu," Ms Palaszczuk said on Saturday.

"Queensland stands ready to offer whatever assistance is needed to help the people of Vanuatu get back on their feet."

The crews are experienced with disaster recovery, with the state recently bearing the brunt of Cyclone Marcia as well as heavy rain from Cyclone Nathan.

The latter was almost stationary by mid-morning, about 145 kilometres northeast of Cape Movement, ahead of an expected move eastwards and out to sea.

The premier says she and Energy Minister Mark Bailey will provide updates if the offer is accepted.
