Qld mulls harsher penalties for drivers
HOW QUEENSLAND'S GOVERNMENT PLANS TO MAKE ROADS SAFER:
Review and potentially change penalties for:
- Dangerous and careless driving
- Hit-and-run accidents
- Drug driving
- School zone speeders
Technology:
- Upgrade wet film mobile speed cameras to digital
- Roll out number plate recognition technology in all police cars
Trial:
- Lower speed limits in areas popular with vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists
Education:
- Teach drivers about road safety online and through social media
- Introduce an app-based learner driver logbook
- Develop an online self-assessment tool for older drivers
Enforcement:
- Slap double demerit point penalties on drivers caught using their phone more than twice in one year.
