Qld MPs to debate end to sand mining

Queensland's politicians are set to decide on the best way to wind back sand mining on North Stradbroke Island.

Two pieces of legislation will be debated side-by-side in state parliament on Wednesday.

The minority Labor government wants to phase out sand mining by 2019, while Katter's Australian Party has introduced a private members' bill to push the phase out back to 2024.

Meanwhile, a parliamentary committee will host a public briefing on Wednesday morning about the government's controversial tree clearing legislation.

Industry and economic groups have hit out at the "draconian" laws, which they say would hurt the state's property market and make life harder for people earning a living off the land.

But the reintroduction of the tree clearing restrictions, which were relaxed by the former Newman government, has been welcomed by green groups.

The Agriculture and Environment Committee is due to report back about the laws by June 30.
