Qld MPs argue pros and cons of reef bill

Queensland politicians will continue to argue the pros and cons of a law proposing to slash the amount of fertiliser and sediment flowing into the Great Barrier Reef.

A bill to enforce minimum standards on farmers, miners and sewer operators to curb run-off into the world's biggest coral reef has been under debate and is expected to pass state parliament this week.

A handful of government MPs successfully pushed on Monday for a five-year freeze on further changes to those standards at the last minute, arguing industry needed certainty going into the future.

But some farmers say the legislation would do nothing to make water around the reef cleaner, and will only hurt their industry.
