DV breaches need tougher penalties: Bates

Weak judicial responses to domestic violence order breaches are leaving victims at risk, a Queensland member of parliament says.

Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Ros Bates says in one Gold Coast electorate more than 800 breaches have been recorded in the past year.

Ms Bates says many of those breaches are multiple offences by the same perpetrator, a symptom of the contempt many treat the conditions imposed on them by the orders.

"What we're talking about here is people who have already been charged completely flouting the new laws," Ms Bates said.

"We've just got to make sure that there is no such thing as a technical breach.

"If someone sends you a text message threatening your life, that is not a technical breach."

Ms Bates also criticised the Queensland government for failing to ensure support and funding reached domestic violence victims.
