Qld MP reveals ETU hate campaign

Wheelchair-bound Queensland MP Rob Pyne has accused a union of a vicious "hate campaign" against him which has left his teenage daughter scared to leave their house.

Mr Pyne, a quadriplegic, tabled in state parliament on Thursday personal attacks posted on the Electrical Trades Union Facebook pages, including slurs about his disability.

The newly Independent Cairns MP says the attacks have been relentless since he defected from Labor in March.

"The ETU has subjected my family, staff and myself to appalling treatment, including these comments on the ETU page," Mr Pyne said.

"From (state secretary) Peter Simpson: `Rob Pyne is a compulsive liar, a rat, a megalomaniac, end of story'.

"And other comments including: `hope he gets run over by a bus', `Pyne makes Ratsak seem like a better option', `Can you put someone in a wheelchair twice? Hang this grub for treason'."

The tabled documents showed a picture of ETU organiser Stuart Traill wearing a union-branded shirt reading "When you rat on your mates it's a Pyne in the arse" and a picture of Mr Pyne's head on a rat's body.

Labor MP Shane King commented: "I know where a couple of them could be sold if you do a run".

His colleague Nikki Boyd liked another picture referring to Mr Pyne as a rat, while several other Labor MPs followed the ETU page, but didn't directly contribute to the abuse.

Mr Pyne asked his former Labor colleagues to consider how they'd feel if they were targeted by the "hate campaign".

"I ask those members ... how they would feel if it was their wife in tears, how would they would feel if their 18-year-old daughter was scared to leave the house?" Mr Pyne said.

"I ask electricians across Queensland how they would feel if their families were treated in this manner?"

Mr Simpson denied the ETU had attacked the MP's staff or family, but admitted to calling him a rat, pointing out Mr Pyne had previously referred to himself as a rat in parliament.

"The bottom line is it was ETU Members who helped get the Rat elected and it is hard working ETU Members who are seriously disappointed in his actions and lies," he said in a statement.

Ms Palaszczuk later told parliament nobody supported the attacks against Mr Pyne.

Police Minister Bill Byrne said it would be up to Mr Pyne to make a formal complaint about the abuse, but suggested it came with the territory.

"Politicians are subject to the most derogatory commentary," he said.

"Of course I'm appalled by the language used ... but I receive similar sorts of commentary on a very regular basis."
