Queensland man's charges to be upgraded to murder after fight

A Queensland man is set to be charged with murder after his alleged victim died days after he was stabbed in the head.

Police say a 36-year-old Gordonvale man's charges will be upgraded to murder after a 52-year-old Manoora man died on Sunday afternoon at Townsville Base Hospital.

It is alleged the older man suffered critical head injuries during an altercation at Pease Street in Manoora, Cairns, on May 27.

The 36-year-old faced charges of grievous bodily harm when he appeared before the Cairns Magistrates Court on May 28, where he was remanded in custody.

It is expected he will face murder charges when he reappears at court on June 22.

Police say the men knew each other.
