A homeless man is still missing a day after running into waters off the Sunshine Coast to avoid being arrested.

Ricky Gardner, 37, was last seen entering the water and swimming away from shore at Noosa Main Beach about 12.30am (AEST) on Saturday.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday that officers were trying to arrest Mr Gardner, wanted on minor charges, when he ran into the water.

Officers still don't know whether he made it back to shore safely.

Water police and other agencies were continuing to search for him on Sunday afternoon.

They have released a photo of his 2001 Holden Commodore station wagon with the NSW registration XOA-264, asking anyone who has seen the vehicle to contact police.

He's described as Caucasian, about 178cm tall, with a slim build and light complexion.
