A Queensland couple returned to their home after a trip to southeast Asia.

Hours later, the woman was dead, and the man has been charged with her murder.

Queensland Police found the woman, 54, after being called to the property at Springfield Lakes, west of Brisbane, about 10pm on Monday.

They would not confirm reports she had been stabbed in the neck with a knife, but believe they have the weapon involved in her death.

"The injuries that were inflicted, she died from," Detective Inspector David Briese told reporters on Tuesday.

It's believed the 59-year-old man called the police.

The couple had been living in Australia for more than a decade. They were both permanent residents and are believed to have returned from their trip on Monday afternoon.

Police inquiries with family, friends and neighbours continue.

"If they're aware of any issues, anything that's occurred recently or in the past between them, we'd be asking them to contact us," Det Insp Briese said.

"We don't believe the public has anything to fear as a result of this incident."

Police are trying to determine if the couple were married.

The man is due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
