A missing Queensland man has been found down a 50-metre embankment after surviving four days without food and water.

Andrew Clay, 60, went missing on Sunday and spent four days alone on the Toowoomba range in sometimes freezing temperatures.

He was found by police on Thursday morning at Redwood and taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital, suffering from hypothermia but in a stable condition.

Constable Darren Goodwin, who found Mr Clay, told The Toowoomba Chronicle the missing man had gone without food or water for four nights, during which temperatures dropped to below zero.

Const Goodwin spotted Mr Clay's shoes after hearing a rock move.

"He did manage a bit of a smile. He's not in a good way but he is much better now we have him," Const Goodwin said.

A Queensland police spokesman said the events surrounding his disappearance are still unclear.
